Concussions and Cognitive Skills
Not surprisingly, many clients of our firm suffer from head injuries, concussion, and traumatic brain injuries as a result of accidents. Much research has been done and publicized in recent years due to concerns of long-term effects from head injuries. While in the past it was thought by medical providers and other experts that a concussion victim might experience cognitive deficits for weeks after injury, a new school of thought is stating that the effects could last much more long-term, as in up to 55 years long-term.
With cognitive deficits in areas such as memory and attention, individuals could have difficulty with things like studying for a test or many other activities requiring those areas. For older individuals, it can be frustrating that cognitive issues might not be recognized as related to a head injury, but instead assumed to be a natural part of aging. It is important for all patient populations to inform their medical providers of previous head injuries so that the best information and expertise can be used in diagnoses and treatments. Unfortunately, there remains an overall lack of concussion and head injury awareness, so it is necessary for the patient to be informed and active in all of your medical care.
