Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month for good reason.  The weather is warmer and the motorcycles are back out on the roads to enjoy the open road and pursue their motorcycle passion.  With more motorcycles out on the road, unfortunately, comes more accidents that yield injuries and fatalities.  Therefore, Motorcycle Safety Awareness month seeks to warn drivers to watch out for motorcycles and motorcycles to drive defensively and be on the constant lookout.  Right here in Nebraska, the interstate has signs alerting drivers to watch out for motorcycles.  Law enforcement is doing all they can to warn motorcyclists and their fellow drivers out on the roads to be alert and think safety first.

For the motorcycle driver, be sure that you are not stopping last minute but allowing plenty of time to stop, with signals of all your moves.  You must constantly be aware of your surroundings, as your own life is literally in your own hands many times on the road full of distracted drivers.  It is important that before you start your ride, you always, always, always check out your bike to be sure that your lights are functioning, your turn signal works, your tires are in good condition, and the bike is road worthy.  Be sure to stay off the bike if you are at all impaired by a substance or by fatigue or heat exhaustion.  You must be alert so any impairment is too much impairment.

For the drivers out on the roads with the motorcycles, always be on the lookout for motorcycles sharing the roads with you, being prepared to give them some room to move side to side, share the road, and stop.  Remember motorcycles appear smaller and farther away than they actually are!  The road is for all legal drivers to enjoy and share, so let’s all be safe out there and look out for one another.
