Foodborne Illnesses on the Loose Summer of 2018

This firm is starting to feel a little redundant in its warnings to its valued readership regarding foodborne illness outbreaks in the United States, but knows the important thing is the health and safety of fellow consumers.  Health officials in these United States have issued even more warnings about foods found as culprits of serious illnesses.

This firm resides in the Midwest and so knew that a population of its blog devotees shop at Hy-Vee Grocery Stores.  The stores’ Spring Pasta Salad, sold in 8 states, has been found to infects unsuspecting consumers with salmonella illnesses.  The states include Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, and Wisconsin for illness reports and Spring Pasta Salad locations.  The packages were made between June 1, 2018 and July 13, 2018 and have expiration dates of June 22, 2018 and August 3, 2018.  If you have any of this batch, you are warned to throw it out immediately.  Salmonella illness symptoms will generally start 12 to 72 hours after infection and symptoms can last 4 to 7 days and be dangerous for more compromised populations.

Salmonella problems have also been found in raw turkey products, without the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention even narrowing down the culprit to a specific brand.  The salmonella in turkey products has caused about 90 to be sick thus far and the turkey products have been purchased in a variety of locations. Two of the sicknesses even occurred in folks living in a house in which the pets were eating raw turkey pet food.  This would make a person really rethink eating turkey from raw turkey products for the time being. Hopefully the CDC and U.S. Department of Agriculture can narrow down the culprits by Thanksgiving!

Flowers Foods has announced that Swiss rolls might also be contaminated with salmonella, with these products being sold under the brand names of Great Value, Market Square, Baker’s Treat, Mrs. Freshley’s, Food Lion, and H-E-B.  There is also a recall for the same reason of Captain John Derst’s Old Fashioned Bread, which is distributed in the Carolinas, Georgia, Florida, and Alabama.

Fresh crab meat from Venezuela is yet another product the FDA warns is causing an outbreak of Vibrio parahaemolyticus in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Louisiana, and the District of Columbia.  This illness will cause symptoms in about 24 hours after consumption and is usually in plastic tubs containing a label “pre-cooked.”

This firm has also warned about a number of other products also continuing to cause foodborne illness problems, including prepared cut melon and vegetable products, McDonalds salads, and Kellogg’s Honey Smacks cereal.

If you or a loved one has been sickened by any of the above, contact your doctor immediately and do not hesitate to contact Inserra Kelley Sewell, Personal Injury Attorneys where our compassionate professionals can advise whether you may be entitled to compensation for your injuries. Be careful consumers, as it is getting ugly out there.

Fast Food Giant McDonalds Salads Causing Sickness

Fast food giant McDonalds has joined the ranks of the companies sounding the sirens for foodborne illnesses.  If going to McDonalds and selecting that “healthier” option of a salad you could be at risk for a food and waterborne cyclospora catetanensis parasite sickening 163 people and hospitalizing three after consumption of McDonalds salads.  The restaurant had to completely halt sales of salads in their stores getting the lettuce for the salads from Fresh Express of Streamwood, Illinois.  The states that have had resultant illnesses include Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, South Dakota, Kentucky, Missouri, and Ohio. There are other states in which the McDonalds stores also receive products from Fresh Express, including Michigan, Montana, North Dakota, and West Virginia.  The latter four states simply had not yet had reported illnesses from their salads at the time of this writing.

Cyclosporiasis is the illness resulting from foods tainted by cyclospora, via fecal matter.  Symptoms of the illness includes stomach pain, stomach cramps, bloating, gas, loss of appetite, nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, and weight loss.  It will not likely start until a week has passed since consumption of the contaminated food, but if untreated could last a long time and even relapse.

If you or a loved one has been sickened with salmonella infection, contact your doctor immediately and do not hesitate to contact Inserra Kelley Sewell, Personal Injury Attorneys where our compassionate professionals can advise whether you may be entitled to compensation for your injuries.

Cervical Cancer Screening Investigation For Missed Diagnoses

Cervical cancer is a very serious diagnosis impacting the lives of thousands of women each year. In Ireland, officials are currently starting an inquiry into why 208 women were given the all clear for cervical cancer, only to be later diagnosed with cervical cancer. At least 17 of the 208 women have died thus far and the government wants to know why a publicly funded pap smear testing program gave these women the wrong diagnosis. The false negatives for the lab results were given between 2010 and 2014. Due to the public nature of the testing, the government in Ireland is now carrying out the somber task of contacting every woman affected, including the surviving family of the 17 women who lost their lives in this debacle.

If a woman is diagnosed early with cervical cancer, there can be as high as a 95 percent chance the cancer will be cured. However, when the cancer is left undiagnosed because of a false negative test, the odds go down with every year and the cancer becomes incurable. To make things uglier, the government run CervicalCheck program tried at first to keep the knowledge of the false negatives from the affected women and then argued with physicians over whose responsibility it was to alert the affected women. A single lawsuit brought the ugly truth to light. Clinical Pathology Laboratories, Inc. of Austin, Texas in the United States was sued by 43-year-old Vicky Phelan, who was a terminally ill woman from County Limerick given an initial false negative. The settlement was two and a half million euros, which translates to about three million U.S. dollars. It was found that her 2011 test was falsely called negative and in 2014 it was found that the 2011 test actually showed a strong cancer diagnosis. Unfortunately, this settlement comes a bit too late, given the fact that Ms. Phelan was told in January of 2018 that she only had about 6 months to live. In making the decision that she would not sign a confidentiality agreement in her case, Ms. Phelan may be a hero in perhaps alerting other women and also alerting officials to the fatal mistakes of the CervicalCheck program and the labs it went to for results.

The above is sad news to report and it is hoped that none of our viewership has been the victim of such a dangerous medical scandal. If you or a loved has been injured or worse by the fault of medical products on the market, be sure to consult with your personal physician immediately. Do not hesitate to bring questions regarding your personal situation and possible claim to the caring legal experts at Inserra Kelley Sewell, where your health and safety is priority one.

Competitive Cyclist Killed Is Reminder To Watch For Bicyclists On The Road

It is summertime and the warm temperatures and longer days bring out the bicyclist in everyone, from the novice to the competitive rider.  Inserra Kelley Sewell is sad to report news of a competitive cyclist being killed in Nebraska’s neighboring state of Iowa, on U.S. Highway 218 near Washburn, Iowa, in the early morning hours of July 2, 2018.  Connie Inks, 54, of Waterloo, Iowa was killed in a wreck involving a vehicle driven by a fellow Waterloo resident.  Ms. Inks was reportedly an avid and longtime cyclist, rower, and tri-athlete, as well as a frequent medal winner in the sports.  With such experience and mastery of the sports, one could surmise she was well-acquainted and experienced with road cycling. The details are still being investigated in this very sad and tragic event, and Inserra Kelley Sewell offers its most sincere condolences to family and friends of Ms. Inks.

Such a tragic event is a reminder of the need for us to look out for one another in our days of scurrying from place to place on jam-packed days.  In modern society, our roads and highways are being shared by folks from bicyclists to truck drivers, and all sorts of vehicles in between. We are often heading to work or other important destinations and the culture we live in lends itself to drivers often being distracted from total focus on the road and others.  This tragedy is an unfortunate reminder to slow it down to the speed limit, always be alert and undistracted, and to drive with safety in mind at all times on the road.

If you or a loved one has been injured as a result of an incident involving a motor vehicle or other hazards, do not hesitate to contact Inserra Kelley Sewell, Personal Injury Attorneys. Our compassionate professionals are at the ready to advise whether you may be entitled to compensation for your injuries or loss.
