Perhaps many of you are out there thinking that the days of danger with silicone breast implants are long gone and over with? Unfortunately, there has been recent notice given to the fact that there still has not been any reliable, hard evidence given to the public to assure that this is in fact true. The silicone gel breast implant was reintroduced to the American consumer going on ten years ago, but no one has proved up the safety, which is unfortunate for the consumer while probably not so big a bother to the companies profiting from possibly questionable silicone gel implants being sold to hundreds of thousands per year.
A whopping three-quarters of the breast implants performed each year in the United States do utilize the silicone gel implant that is favored due to the more natural look of the gel filling over the saline filling of saline implants. The silicone gel implants first were taken off the market by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) back in 1992 and lawsuits followed, but then the implants were brought back in 2006, but no good proof was given that they do not still cause problems. Problem possibilities in people with the silicone gel implants can include cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, reproductive problems, immunity issues, blood flow issues, connective tissue disease, and even mental health problems! These are not problems to take lightly and researchers believe that larger studies are needed in order to come up with solid evidence that, for instance, the silicone implants are not linked up with lung cancer, blood flow problems, and immunity disorders. A national breast implant registry has been created and it is hoped that new study and analysis will support this registry and track all breast implants to look at effects 5 to 15 years down the road. At this point, no strong evidence has been found that actually links the problematic health conditions due to silicone breast implants, but without good proof that they are not linked it puts the consumer in the position of really weighing the possible risks and benefits of the implants.
